DEA Career

Midnight drug raids. Patrolling the skies and seas for illegal shipments. Going undercover to infiltrate international drug organizations. The Drug Enforcement Administration is a powerful arm of the American legal system. And the only thing between you and a DEA career is formal training.

DEA Career Profile
The war on drugs in the 1980s began the heyday of the DEA. Since that time, billions of dollars are earmarked annually for personnel, equipment, and operations in the fight against illegal drugs. Agents are finding employment opportunities at the federal, state, and local level across the nation and around the world. Agents may work in teams or as single operatives, investigating leads or serving warrants. According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration careers web site, opportunities for a rewarding DEA career include:
  • Special Agent
  • Intelligence Research Specialist
  • Forensic Chemist
  • Diversion Investigator
  • INFOSEC Positions
  • Investigative Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Forensic Accounting
What It Takes to Get There
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most federal law enforcement agencies such as the DEA require either a bachelor's degree, professional law enforcement experience, or a combination of the two. Your DEA career will begin with focused training at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, or the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. Topics include weapons, investigation, technology, and specialized skills related to the desired position within the agency. Advancement opportunities for successful candidates exist in training, research, and leadership positions. Promotions follow demonstrated excellence in a given area of operations.
